Captain Jaren Guttierez is one of the newest long-term SIS residents. They credit their Brooklyn, NY attitude and Afro-Dominican heritage for motivating their dedication to become an astronaut. Jaren is amongst one of the newest AAA cohort classes and is excited to work alongside Commander Swanson on their first AAA mission. Jaren is also a prominent advocate for research on cancer, kidney diseases, and lung diseases after witnessing several family members battle with each one.

Their saltwater fishtank won the Hudson River Valley Aquaculture Association’s “Best in Show” for the third year in a row, thanks in large part to a colony of feather dusters. Then, for one more fun fact: Guttierez is the only ambidextrous astronaut at ASAN!
